Neck Injuries From Weightlifting

While lifting weights it is very easy to acquire a neck injury. There are several reasons why this may occur, but understanding why it happened, the symptoms and the treatment options available is going to be the biggest factor in a patient’s recovery from neck pain. Symptoms may include anything from neck stiffness to pain that limits your range of motion. Typically the pain will subside after about a week. However, if the pain does not stop or if the patient discovers more serious issues, the injured party should consult a spine specialist.  One of the telltale signs that you should contact a specialist is if you begin to experience pain that radiates down your shoulders and/or arms, numbness or tingling in your extremities, changes in bowel or bladder function or an inability to bend your chin to your chest.

The cause of a neck injury in the gym can be a variety of things. The most common causes include:
  • Poor posture/technique
  • Overextending your neck, shoulders and/or back

  • Twisting your body when you lift

  • Putting too much tension on the neck

  • Jarring the body too quickly

The best way to prevent neck pain when lifting is to study your technique and always stay within your realm. Bending at the knees, maintain a natural position with your back and do not hyperextend or hunch your back when lifting. As you lift the weights, let your legs do most of the work and avoid twisting your body.
